brad bolton > Seven ROMEOS rode the Montour Trail (a rail trail) around Pittsburgh. The trail varied widely, from paved, to crushed limestone (like CVNP), to two narrow tracks. We started in Coraopolis, rode the trail Clairton, and mainly rode rte. 837 back to the start point - about 90 miles.
brad bolton > A better part of the Montour Trail.
brad bolton > Bill and Steve, reaching the first summit on the trail after 12 miles of climbing a gentle grade. Hard to believe we were only 12 miles from the center of Pittsburgh. Behind is not a mountain, but a landfill. A legacy for the ages.
brad bolton > Wave to the nice people, guys! Crossing the first summit on the Montour Trail.
brad bolton > The Montour Trail is about 60 miles long, and is a volunteer effort. Each community contributes what it can, and if it can't, the trail suffers. In many places the trail ended abruptly - but with some exploration, and querying the locals, the next section of trail could be found. Here we had to make our way down to a road when we ran into yet another dead end on the trail.
brad bolton > Early afternoon, and we were getting hungry. Heard about a place off the trail - but it was closed, on vacation. Probably a good thing - who would want to eat at a place called Muck's? "All you can eat - the Muck special." Muck? - yuck.
brad bolton > Reorganizing after a few miles of wandering looking for the trail.
brad bolton > This was a rail - trail, a railroad converted to a bike trail. In places where a railroad bridge had been removed, we had to walk down and up steep paths to continue.
brad bolton > A tunnel on the Montour rail-trail, with ROMEO riders entering. And yes, there is a light at the end of the tunnel.
